Background
Among the most famous of the phantom ships is the legendary
Flying Dutchman a ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. According the legend, Van der Decken, the captain of the Flying Dutchman, swore that he would round the Cape even if he had to sail straight into the wind. Because of this oath, Van der Decken was condemned to sail forever against just such an adverse wind, together with his crew.
Sightings in the 19th and 20th centuries report the ship to be glowing with a ghostly light. It is said that if hailed by another ship, its crew will try to send messages to land or to people long dead. The ship was feared by mariners as an omen of disaster and a sight of this phantom ship is a potent of doom. The last recorded sighting occurred at Cape Town in 1942 when four witnesses saw a sailing ship enter Table Bay and then disappear before their eyes. What really happened at the sea will probably remain concealed for us forever. Inspired by the analogy of The Flying Dutchmen, H0lland decided at 24 October 1999 to name our clan after it.
The Flying Dutchmen was born.
